Database Officer

The Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is a recognized global leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS.  In its work to eliminate paediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs, EGPAF currently supports national, district, and local governments, facilities, communities, and non-governmental partners. In 2020, EGPAF’s global footprint spans 17 countries.  EGPAF supports service provision for comprehensive HIV care, treatment and prevention programs, and health systems strengthening. To date, EGPAF has supported over 15,000 sites to offer HIV counselling, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services alongside high-quality family health care.

EGPAF has worked in Malawi since 2001. Today, EGPAF Malawi implements evidence?based HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions in 151 health facilities in nine districts through EGPAF’s U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief/U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (PEPFAR/CDC) ?funded Achieving HIV Epidemic Control through Scaling Up Quality Testing, Care and Treatment in Malawi.

EGPAF seeks to fill the following open positions:

Database Officer

Reports to      :           Malawi Health Data Lake – Team Lead

Position Summary

The Database Officer will join the Malawi Health Data Lake team under the leadership of the Malawi Health Data Lake Team Lead. The role will involve providing proactive and reactive Database Administration services to support developers, the internal Business Systems team and users.

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities will include but not limited to;

  • Ensure day-to-day availability of all SQL databases;
  • Ensure daily backups of all databases are done properly;
  • Conduct frequent DR failover and testing exercises across all DBs;
  • Work with the development team to build object Relational Mapping Classes for the Data Lake Applications
  • Apply patches and upgrades as/when required;
  • Ensure the security of data is maintained at all times;
  • Regularly audit user access to all DBs;
  • Conduct daily routine tasks including health/sanity checks;
  • See to the regular and complete execution of all DB schedules, tasks and jobs;

Required Qualifications and attributes

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems or Health informatics or any related fields preferred (Fresh graduates are encourages to apply)
  • Data modeling, Database design, Capacity management, Database administration and Storage management practical knowledge
  • MYSQL, MS SQL , NOSQL and ORACLE practical knowledge
  • Solid object oriented programming practical experience in one of the major scalable languages
  •  Demonstrable experience of performance tuning and query optimization
  •  Experience of the full Software Development Lifecycle, utilizing both Agile and Waterfall Project Delivery methods
  • Working knowledge of PEPFAR programs and health systems in Malawi.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines while producing quality content.
  • Comfortable working long hours if needed
  • Ability to translate user requirements into functional specifications
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral, presentation, written communication and analytical skills.
  • Experience in working effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting.
  • Able to create, motivate and hold accountable a high performing team
  • Highly organized, meticulous and reliable
