Job Description


The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02 of the Laws of Malawi), with a mandate to promote metrology, standardization and quality assurance of commodities and of their manufacture, production, processing or treatment; and further to provide for matters incidental to, or connected with standardization.The MBS is also mandated to provide metrology services which involves verification and weighing and measuring instruments, undertaken through the implementation of the Metrology Act (Act No. 10 of 2016).

In order to fulfill its mandate effectively and efficiently with strategic leadership and management, an opportunity has arisen to engage a qualified person of Malawian origin to fill a Management position of Director of Quality Assurance Services tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre. The MBS Board therefore invites applications from suitable candidates to fill the position on a three (3) year employment contract, which is subject for renewal upon satisfactory performance.

Position: Director of Quality Assurance Services (Re-Advertised)

This is a highly demanding position that requires a person who has demonstrable capacity to initiate administrative, managerial and technical innovations geared at making MBS a vibrant service organization.

Summary of the job

Reporting to the Deputy Director General, the Director of Quality Assurance Services will be responsible for ensuring efficient and effective certification and quality monitoring of local products and services, imported products and export products, and the implementation of management systems certification schemes.

Key duties and responsibilities

The following are the key duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and supervising quality assurance activities for local, imported and export products as well as management systems based on relevant national and international standards
  • Leading audits for management systems based on relevant national and international standards;
  • Conducting executive quality audits for product certification schemes based on relevant national standards
  • Developing and reviewing of operational documents for the Quality Assurance Services Department based on relevant national and international standards
  • Consolidating annual, quarterly, monthly and weekly departmental operational plans and reports, and presenting the same to management
  • Providing advice to top management on matters pertaining to quality assurance services
  • Conducting performance appraisals for departmental staff
  • Coordinating preparation of departmental budgets and presentation of the same to management; and
  • Monitoring the implementation of the approved departmental budget.

Academic and professional qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • At least a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science and Technology/ Environmental Science/ Natural Science/ Engineering
  • Those with professional qualification in Quality Assurance with respect to international conformity assessment standards, will have an added advantage
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in a related field.

  • Be decisive, self-motivated and assertive
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and able to deal with a diverse workforce
  • Be of high integrity; and
  • Have excellent negotiating and analytical skills.
