MCC cover all basic needs (Travel expenses to and from assignment, food & household, housing, and transportation related to assignment). The Service Worker will be based in Blantyre, where the BIC CODES office is located. The local diet in Blantyre /Malawi typically consists of cornmeal stiff porridge (nshima), rice with a green vegetable, fish or meat relish. Basic services such as electricity and water supply are available, though service is frequently interrupted. Cell phone coverage and limited internet services are available in Blantyre. Wireless modems are available for high speed connections. The Service Worker could expect to have regular, although not always daily, access to internet services. A cell phone is provided by MCC with widespread coverage.

Blantyre, is about 250 km south of Lilongwe the capital city of Malawi. Blantyre has a business area which has a range of shopping facilities which carry a variety of foods. However, availability of products can vary. An open-air market and various small stalls provide a range of fresh produce. Big buses/coaches operate from Blantyre to Lilongwe the capital city. The country has numerous national parks for excellent game viewing. Basic medical services are available in Blantyre and Lilongwe. In addition, there are various private medical, counseling, and dental clinics in Blantyre and Lilongwe.


? Many roads surrounding Blantyre neighborhood are not paved. Unpaved roads can become very muddy in the rainy season from November to April. During the dry season of May-October the environment can be dusty, which may aggravate allergies or respiratory conditions.

? Temperatures in the hot season of September to November can reach the high 30s C. The BIC offices are not air-conditioned.

? The daily schedule may change at short notice and will require patience and flexibility

? Groundnuts/Peanuts are commonly used in cooking.

? Malawi is a malaria area and taking antimalarial medication and other precautions to reduce the risk from mosquito bites is strongly advised.

? Local church and area not supportive to openly LGBTQ* persons and homosexuality is illegal in Malawi.

1.    Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred) in agriculture, international development, program monitoring and evaluation, or a related discipline

2.    Experience working with agricultural development projects and/or Community/Faith Based Organizations, particularly at the grassroots level.

3.    Demonstrated knowledge of project planning, report writing, monitoring, and evaluation tools

4.    Familiar with working in rural areas with focus on participatory processes.

The Food Security/Conservation Agriculture Technical Advisor will work primarily with the Brethren in Christ (BIC) Compassion and Development Services (CODES) organization implementing a Canadian Food Grain Bank (CFGB) – funded food-security/conservation agriculture project, accompanying them in planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. This position is an exciting opportunity to maximize the positive impact for project participants in an area of critical need for Malawi.

The Service Worker will provide technical support and work alongside the BIC CODES management team located in Blantyre, Malawi.

BIC CODES Program Coordination (80%)

1. Assist the BIC CODES Program Manager in the technical design and development of the MCC/CFGB-funded conservation agriculture project.

2. Assist and train BIC CODES field staff in using appropriate conservation agriculture methodologies and tools to measure progress.

3. Oversee plan implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting requirements. Work will include analyzing data and utilizing monitoring and evaluation data to understand the overall progress in reaching project outcomes and maximizing the positive impact for project participants.

4. Serve in a liaison role between MCC and BIC CODES, facilitating communication on a day-to-day basis in consultation with BIC CODES leadership.

5. Participate in connecting BIC CODES with other organizations doing similar food-security work through networking and researching what other organizations are doing, with the goal of cross-checking and benefiting from what has been learned in other projects.

6. Identify areas of needs for capacity-building for the staff and opportunity for training, especially in the implementation of the CFGB-funded project.

MCC PMER Support (20%)

1. Stay current with applied research in areas of conservation agriculture and implementation practices for the benefit of the MCC Zambia/Malawi team and partner organization

2. Coordinate with national, and regional organizations promoting Agriculture and Livelihoods activities, including Conservation Agriculture, in order to advance MCC’s interests and visibility in the region.

3. Regularly update the MCC PlanWin database for the BIC CODES project

Connect with other MCC partners in Malawi/Zambia, and provide technical support as needed.

Assignment Narrative:

The Service Worker will be based in Blantyre at the Brethren in Christ Compassion and Development Services (CODES) headquarters. MCC has been worked with the Brethren in Christ Church in Malawi in emergency food assistance, relief distribution, and on issues of gender-based violence in the church. Currently, a five-month food assistance project is underway, and it will be completed on March 31, 2020. At that time, a situation assessment is planned for a future CFGB food security assistance project.

The Service Worker will be responsible for working alongside the CODES project management team in planning, and implementing the project, monitoring the activities and evaluating the results of the project. The specifics of the project intervention design will depend on the data collected in the Situation Assessment.

The Service Worker would be supported by the BIC CODES project management team based in Blantyre, and the MCC Representatives for Zambia/Malawi based in Lusaka, Zambia. The MCC supervisors for this position will be the MCC Representatives for Zambia/Malawi.
