Job Description

The College of Medicine (CoM) was established in 1991 as a constituent college of the University of Malawi. Its mission is to be an academic centre of excellence in the training of doctors and other health professionals in clinical service and medical research, responsive to the health needs of Malawi and its neighbours within the Southern African region. In pursuit of the mission, the CoM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacancies:


Position: Laboratory Technician (Blantyre-1 position)


Job Summary

Reporting to Head of Department, the successful candidate will be expected to Head the laboratory section of the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Among other duties and responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Perform and supervise experiments;
  • Perform routine and non-routine analyses;
  • Receive or collect as well as process samples;
  • Maintain equipment in proper working order and maintain a clean work area;
  • Practice safe work habits, including complying with all safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations;
  • Keep records/inventory of equipment and consumables;
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for laboratory equipment;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the head of department.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Applicants should possess at least a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in any of the following: Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Biotechnology.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience.
