Radio Operator (2 Positions)


Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Local Security Associate, the Radio Operator will facilitate radio and telephone communications. The position is locally administered by UNDP but is financed centrally by the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain radio contact with all radio users, stations and vehicles operating on the United Nations inter-agency radio network(s) under their responsibility.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all relevant messages sent and received through the radio room communications systems.
  • Receive and direct all calls/enquiries to the radio room as appropriated. In case of an emergency immediately inform the Supervisor (and radio room supervisor).
  • Ensure all network users are complying with standard radio procedures and that call signs and radio discipline are strictly maintained.
  • Immediately advise the radio room supervisor or DSS officer on faults in the telecommunication networks and undertake all necessary actions to provide a prompt re-establishment of service.
  • Assist the Radio Technician in the installation and arrangement of equipment and fixtures where needed.
  • Conduct Monthly Radio Check with agencies and ensure Vehicle Tracking Reports are produced.
  • Maintain an accurate and comprehensive list of staff with all their contacts.

Deliverables at the end of the contract
  • Radio and telephone communications are facilitated.
  • Monthly Radio Check and Vehicle Tracking Reports are produced.
  • Emergencies are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • All outgoing telephone calls are logged.
  • Radio Operators should be ready to work 12 hours shifts.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum qualification: diploma in IT or Telecommunications
  • 2 years’ experience as a Radio Operator or in an IT related field
  • Possession of a valid Driving Licence essential
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Chichewa
