With support from the government of Malawi and international donors such as USAID, KfW, DFID and Unicef, PSI has worked in Malawi for over 22 years, Since 1994, we have implemented social marketing and social franchising programs with behavior change communication to deliver prevention and treatment products and services across a wide range of health areas including Family Planning and Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS, malaria and child survival, and water-borne diseases. The program is a top DALY (disability-adjusted life years) and CYP (couple years of protection) performer for PSI with over 820,000 DALYS and over 300,000 CYPs annually and an annual budget of over $15 million. Based on this background, PSI Malawi seeks a highly qualified candidate for the position of Social Franchise Specialist.  The candidate will provide effective technical leadership and day-to-day management of PSI Malawi’s Tunza Family Health Network social franchise to increase access to affordable, high quality health services in the country.  The position will lead an exciting new strategy to improve the efficiency and health impact as the healthcare network expands into the Southern region of the country.  This is a full-time position, based in Lilongwe, Malawi, and reports to the Head of Marketing, Research and Learning.

Your contribution­– You’ll provide technical oversight to lead the Tunza franchise, managing a small but motivated team, to ensure that all Tunza member facilities are offering high quality primary health care services, effectively generating demand for their services, and making evidence-based decisions around business growth.  You will be in charge of launching a new “graduation pathway for success” within the franchise, where members are segmented into tiers based on productivity, and strategically progress to the highest level of performance.  New strategies will also be employed, under your lead, to support high performing clinics in maintaining this level of productivity.  You will be in charge of team management, as well as tracking of costing, budgets, and work plans, to ensure overall successful performance of the Tunza Social Franchise.

Under your supervision, the Tunza team will also be responsible for:

  • Ensuring quality health services are delivered through the Tunza network members
  • Integrating service delivery and expanding service package offerings
  • Building business skills to strengthen franchisee business growth
  • Applying new learning in scaling effective demand creation strategies
  • Testing strategic purchasing of private sector services in collaboration with the Government of Malawi
  • Closely tracking, analyzing, and recommending iterations to franchisor costs
  • Expanding the network to the Southern region of the country
  • Approve requisite program documentation, such as (but not limited to requisitions, advocacy strategies for health areas, log frames, donor reports, lessons learned briefs, or representation of the team on procurement committees.
  • Where appropriate, ensure Tunza meets PSI Global Network minimum Programmatic Standards.


  • Business-minded development professional with passion for sustainable healthcare solutions
  • Master’s degree in relevant field (Business Management, International Development, Public Health, etc.) or equivalent experience. Those with Bachelors of Business Administration or Public Health with 10 years’ experience in a similar position can also apply.
  • Strong leader with cross-cutting skill-set, including team management, strategy implementation, and financial management
  • Quick-learner, motivated to meet performance targets; swift problem-solver and embraces adaptive learning in program implementation
  • Experience in working with entrepreneurs to strengthen their business performance and profitability
  • Ability to work effectively in partnership with a variety of audiences and organizations
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, or managing staff
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal communications preferred
